Hello everyone! We’re approaching the end of the academic year, and we’d be delighted to have you join Animania for the last screening of the year.

Summer 1966: Nishimi Kaoru has moved to live with relatives in Kyushu. He’s been an aloof honor student his whole life, but that starts changing when he meets Kawabuchi Sentaro, the school’s notorious bad boy. Through him, he learns the appeal of jazz and forms his first real friendships.

On the island country Hinomoto, humans hide themselves in fortresses called “stations” against the threat of zombie-like beings with steel hearts known as “Kabane.” Only armored locomotives known as “Hayajiro” go between the stations.

Animania March 2016 Screening

It’s March madness everyone. The semester is finally winding down, and what better way to take a break from studying than to spend some time with Animania for the first screening of the year!

3:30: Swap Meet
Do you ever look at your manga bookshelf and think, “boy, I’m running out of room…” How about that Death Note notebook you just had to get but haven’t touched since your Misa Misa cosplay? Bring all your old “treasures” and swap them with other members of Animania! Think of it like our very own dealer’s room, but feel free to barter and trade. Animania will have a table as well, so you might be able to “negotiate” your way to some raffle prizes…

5:00: Akatsuki no Yona
Episodes 1-3
Princess Yona lives a life of luxury and ease, completely sheltered from the problems of the seemingly peaceful Kingdom of Kouka; however, the sudden murder of the king and betrayal of her beloved cousin Su-won places Yona’s life in mortal peril. Forced to escape only with Son Hak, who is both her childhood friend and bodyguard, the naïve princess soon discovers that Kouka is not the idyllic place she envisioned it to be. Poverty, strife, and corruption run rampant, making reclaiming the throne nothing more than a wishful fantasy given the kingdom’s current state.

Jun is a girl whose words have been sealed away. She was once a very happy girl, but because of a certain thing she said when she was very young, her family was torn apart. One day, the egg fairy appeared in front of her and sealed away her ability to talk in order to stop her from hurting anybody else. Since this traumatic experience, Jun lives in the shadows away from the limelight. But, one day, she is nominated to become an executive member of the “community outreach council.” On top of that, Jun is also appointed to play the main lead in their musical.

3:30: Anime Name That Tune
Do you have hundreds of opening and ending songs downloaded onto your smart phone? Can you recognize the Attack on Titan opening at the drop of a hat? Well, come join Animania this Saturday and put your anime music knowledge to the test when we play Anime Name That Tune; hosted by our very own DJ evaR. We’ll only be able to take a limited number of contestants, so come early if you’d like to participate!

Episodes 1-3
Despite Takasu Ryuji’s gentle personality, his eyes make him look like an intimidating delinquent. Class rearrangements in his second high school year put him together with his best friend, Kitamura Yusaku, and his hidden crush, Kushieda Minori. Along with these two comes Kushieda’s best friend, Aisaka Taiga. Her delicate appearance contrasts with her brutal personality. Secretly in love with Kitamura, Taiga agrees to help Ryuji with his love interest as long as he helps her get closer to hers.

The story centers on Asuna, a girl who spends her solitary days listening to the mysterious music emanating from the crystal radio she received from her father as a memento. However, she embarks on a journey of adventure to meet a boy again, and thus comes to know the cruelty and beauty of the world, as well as loss.

Animania November 2015 Screening

The Michigan November is already in full swing with highs over  80 degrees and dipping below the freezing point. Why not spend your Saturday afternoon in a nice room with fellow anime fans? Our main event will be a swap meet, so come early before all the good stuff is gone!

Ever wondered how to make one of the most iconic Japanese dishes? Come and learn how to roll your own California Roll, one of the most popular rolls in America. Hands-on practice will follow a short demo. There’s a limited number of rolling mats, so be sure to come early if you want to try it out!

4:30: Monster
Episodes 1-3
Tenma Kenzou, a Japanese brain surgeon in Germany, had it all: incredible skill at his work, a rich and beautiful fiancee, and a promising career at his hospital. However, after becoming disenchanted by hospital politics, he chose to save the life of a young boy who got shot in the head over the life of the mayor. As a result, he lost the support of the hospital director, as well as his position in the hospital, and his fiance. A short time later, the hospital director and the doctors that replaced him were murdered, and once again he was catapulted back onto the top. But as the chief suspect of the murders, Tenma did not get a easy life. As a matter of fact, it seems that the boy he saved was much more than he had appeared to be… Now to clear his name and to correct his past mistake, Tenma must get to the bottom of these and other murders, and investigate the truth of the Monster who is behind all of this.

In the near future, a revolutionary new psychotherapy treatment called PT has been invented. Through a device called the “DC Mini”, it is able to act as a “dream detective” to enter into people’s dreams and explore their unconscious thoughts. Before the government can pass a bill authorizing the use of such advanced psychiatric technology, one of the prototypes is stolen, sending the research facility into an uproar. In the wrong hands, the potential misuse of the device could be devastating, allowing the user to completely annihilate a dreamer’s personality while they are asleep. Renowned scientist Dr. Chiba Atsuko, enters the dream world under her exotic alter-ego, code name “PAPRIKA,” in an attempt to discover who is behind the plot to undermine the new invention.

Hello everyone, and welcome back to a new academic year of Animania! We’ve decided to change it up and try out a new screening format this semester. We’ll start earlier in the afternoon (closer to our 4:00 PM starts of yore), but also end earlier as well (we’re targeting 8:00 PM). We’re going to feature one show and one movie each screening, as well as some more engaging content. 3:30: Anime Jeopardy
Anime Jeopardy makes its debut at a screening, run by Animania’s own comedy duo, our President Omar Rifai and Vice President Tad Conrado, and featuring a question bank from the minds of Animania’s executive board members.

4:30: Hataraku Maou-sama (The Devil is a Part-Timer!)
Episodes 1-3
In another dimension, the Devil King Sadao is only one step away from conquering the world when he is beaten by Hero Emilia and forced to drift to the other world: modern-day Tokyo. As “conquering the world” are the only skills the Devil King possesses – and are obviously unnecessary in his new situation – he must work as a freeter to pay for his living expenses.

5:30: Takoyaki
An anime favorite returns to Animania’s screenings! Takoyaki is a ball-shaped Japanese snack made from a wheat flour-based batter, and traditionally filled with diced octopus (tako), and first popularized in Osaka. The version we make at the screening features hot dogs or shrimp, and we will also be making a vegetarian version as well.

6:30: Ghost in the Shell (Movie) (1995)
In the year 2029, the barriers of our world have been broken down by the net and by cybernetics, but this brings new vulnerability to humans in the form of brain-hacking. When a highly-wanted hacker known as “The Puppetmaster” begins involving them in politics, Section 9, a group of cybernetically enhanced cops, is called in to investigate and stop the Puppetmaster. The pursuit will call into question what makes a human and what is the Puppetmaster in a world where the distinction between human and machine is increasingly blurry.
